A while ago I wrote a slightly tongue in cheek article about the eco-friendly merits of caravan holidays and caravanning. Well, it seems I may have been ahead of my time as the National Caravan Council (NCC) have developed a whole web site that will allow you to calculate your caravan carbon footprint and reinforce caravanning as a green way to holiday.
The web site at www.greencaravanning.co.uk has been set up by the National Caravan Council (NCC). On it, holidaymakers can enter the distance they are travelling and what type of car and caravan they are using, to reveal their carbon footprint in terms of C0² output. This can then be compared with flying - and with travelling by train or coach.
Not only is a caravan break friendlier to the planet in terms of fuel consumed but 90% of the caravans in this country are actually made here and so haven’t clocked up transport miles before being sold. The Caravan Club is at the forefront of building its new sites with environmentally friendly features such as solar heating, recycling and dedicated wildlife areas.
There are approximately 500,000 touring caravans in use in the UK with around 3,000 sites. Nearly two million people use their caravans to take touring holidays each year and the number of people turning to caravanning is growing year on year. The caravan industry once had a much maligned image but with initiatives such as this, caravanning is really coming of age.
