Based on a survey by Towergate Insurance of 2,000 people, 65% intended to have a break in the UK in the next 12 months to alleviate the effects of the credit crunch.
Caravans were the top-choice budget holiday for couples in their 30s, while camping was most popular with the under-25s and seaside trips were most favoured by those in their 20s and 30s.
Regionally, Midlanders most favoured seaside trips, while Londoners were least likely to opt for a camping holiday.
Those from north east England were most likely to go camping, while the keenest caravanners were the Welsh.
Towergate Bakers marketing director Paul Havenhead said: "We have noticed a return to popularity of traditional UK holidays.
"Young parents often have nostalgic memories of their own childhood holidays and this, combined with the economic downturn, will create a boom in UK holidays in the year ahead."
