I
remember with some fondness our first family sailing dinghy. The
dinghy was a Skipper 14 that we would take to local lakes, the coast and
occasionally to the river. We would motor down the river with our
trusty British Seagull to navigate the locks much to the horror of my mother. The
starting mechanism involved coiling a piece of rope around the magneto
and giving it a hearty pull. The starting rope with toggle and knot
was always missing when the lock gates opened!
There is obvioulsy some considerable affection for the British Seagull outboard from all over the world. Although production of this quirky British piece of engineering finished in 1996, there is still quite a following and some spare part production is still in operation.
I thought it would be a good idea to bring together all of the British Seagull resources I found whilst I was researching this little piece of British engineering history. I take no responsibility for the authenticity of information or advice you may find on these sites!
A quote from some British Seagull sales literature:
"...IT WAS LEFT UNDER A BUSH at the bottom of the garden for 23 years wrapped in a plastic type bag and forgotten about... without even changing the plug it went on approximately the 12th pull..."
